The four provincial towns: L'Aquila, Chieti, Pescara, Teramo and many other towns with played decisive roles in days gone by, still posses their historic art treasures, their castles, aqueducts, fountains etc. They bear witness to the constant activity and change at sea, on land and in the mountains. From the famous pottery of Castelli to the marquetry-work of Pretoro, from the liqueurs of Tocco Casauria to the work of the Scanno goldsmiths and the embroideries of Pescocostanzo, crafts which very often have their origins way back in prehistoric times are still thriving today in every corner of the region.
The Abruzzo is one of the few regions in which even today the traditional local customs are worn.
Abruzzo can boast of a large number of religious and magic rites: heathen and Christian festivals, tributes to the saints and the drivingout of evil spirits. In Cocullo (L'Aquila) on the first Thursday in May the Festival of the Snake Men takes place in honour of Saint Dominicus. The statue of the saint is covered with live snakes and is then carried round the town in a procession followed by thousands of believers.
In many villages in Abruzzo it is still customary at Christmas-time to burn samples of the various dishes to be eaten at the feast on la log of wood. This is supposed to symbolize the presence of Jesus. The most famous event of the Abruzzo Christmas celebrations takes, place in January - it is the live crib at Rivisondoli, where the local people with each other for the privilege of taking part in this representation of the birth of Christ. This is but one of wide range of traditional celebrations taking place every month of the year.
